Synulox is the most commonly used antibiotic for dogs and cats in the UK. It contains amoxycillin and clavulanic acid which act together to provide a safe and effective antibiotic with activity against a wide range of bacteria. The tablets are flavoured to ease administration to dogs and cats and are given twice daily. They will normally be eaten from the hand, or can be crumbled and added to food. Synulox is safe to use during pregnancy and lactation in dogs and cats. Smaller animals can be given Synulox Drops, but they are not suitable for small herbivores such as rabbits and guinea pigs, which can develop serious enteritis following the use of this type of antibiotic.
Synulox LC is supplied in single-use syringes to treat mastitis in milking cows.

I ordered the product as I needed it quickly and paid extra for express delivery. When the product finally came it did work but it would have worked much better if it had been delivered when the website said it would be. It came 3 days later when I had already run out of the Synulox my vet prescribed. My express delivery payment was refunded but I will not be ordering from VioVet again as they let me down and the consequences could have been serious for my pet

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Synulox Antibiotic for Dogs & Cats, including answers from our team.
Nicolle Brooks
My English Mastiff will not take the tablets prescribed by our vet. We have tries every way and think the only way now is liquid.
He’s very poorly with an infection after meniscus surgery. He won’t eat, just stands with his head down crying.
It is strongly advised you discuss this further with your prescribing vets. Synulox palatable drops are only appropriate for small dogs or puppies/kittens, the volume you will need to give per dose will be way too large for a Mastiff to use the drops appropriately.
There are many other antibiotics available, including injectable. Your vet will be able to advise.

Does this product need prescription?
Yes it does as this is a prescription only medication (POM-V licensed). More information on written prescriptions can be found in the link provided here.

How many 500 mg antibiotics do I need to give my large Barbados for a tooth abscess ?
This is a prescription only medication so you will need to discuss the correct doseage with your vet, they will need to write a prescription for your for us to dispense it to you.

Hi the option that says injection? Is this and oral injection just straight into the mouth with a syringe?
This is a prescription only medication and so you should only use it alongside your vets advice. The injectable version (RTU injection) must be injected by the subcutaneous or intramuscular route. The oral version (Palatable drops) can be administered via syringe into the mouth, or onto the feed.

The tablets are very hard and quite big for a cat. Is there a suggested way to give? Cat is very poorly and not eating so easiest way possible required please. Too big to force pill, I just end up covered in it.
The datasheet for this medication states the following regarding administration:
By the oral route. Synulox palatable tablets are often accepted from the hand even by sick cats and dogs. Alternatively, the tablets may be crushed and added to a little food.
If you are still struggling after trying the above then it is advised you contact your vet. An alternate option may be required.

My dog jas had two hot spot wounds open up on the back of his neck and behind one ear. Will these antibiotics do the job?
Antibiotics are prescription only medications and so can only be used alongside a prescription from your vet. These antibiotics are often prescribed for skin conditions and so they may be appropriate but you will need to contact your vet for them.
If you are treating a hot spot (a superficial skin infection) then surface scrubs like Vetruus CLX Wipes are a good choice. Ideally the area should be clipped to clear any hair and if cleaned with a good wipe twice daily then it should clear within 5 to 7 days. It is important to know that this is a hot spot though, if you are unsure you should chat to your vet.

Does there need to be 12 hours exactly between each dosage of synulox?
If your vet has advised 12 hours between dosing then yes you should make this as close as possible. If you cannot follow their dosing advice you should contact them to discuss this further.

Hi I have been using saline and an ointment now for 2 of my 5 kittens who are now 4 weeks old. After 2 weeks I’ve seen no improvement and as I’m now weaning them on solid I’m wondering whether an oral antibiotic may be safe to use that will kill the bacteria?
Thank you
Synulox is a prescription only medication so you will need a written prescription from your vet to purchase it with us. You should consult them for the issues you are seeing, it sounds like veterinary intervention is required.

My dog shakes his head and keeps scratching his ears is the tablets suitable gor my dogs problem
These tablets are antibiotic tablets and so will only be suitable for treating bacterial infections that are sensitive to the antibiotic itself. It is worth contacting your vet so they can determine whether your dog's specific condition is suitable, and so they can prescribe this for your pet if needed.
Cockapoo mum
Hi my cockapoo is 8 kg
What strength tablet do I give her for ear infection and how often
This is a prescription only medication so you can only use it alongside a prescription from you vet. Please contact your prescribing vet for this information. Doseages can vary depending on the condition being treated and it is important that you follow their guidance.
