Description

OraFresh™ is a gentle and palatable oral hygiene paste containing mild polishing beads and a complex of naturally occurring enzymes involved in:

  • Reducing bacteria which cause bad breath and dental disease.

  • Breaking down and removing plaque.

  • Maintaining overall mouth health.

The highly palatable poultry flavour makes it a pleasant and easy experience for you and your pet. As an alternative to toothpaste, it can be used with or without brushing, and may be added to food or onto a paw if applying directly in to the mouth is not possible.

How does it work?

  • Increases the levels of natural enzymes to reduce harmful bacteria and break down plaque.

  • Mild abrasive beads help gently remove build-up on the teeth, with or without brushing.

  • Bio-adhesive delivery system ensures extended adhesion to the teeth and gums, providing sustained enzyme action and protection.

My Jack Russell came to me when he was 7 and his teeth are a mess with brown stains and tartar. He won’t let me near him with a toothbrush so I’ve had to use the kind of treats that are good for dental health. When I saw this product I thought I would be able to skoosh it onto his teeth at the side of his mouth, but this is not a skooshable product. You have to rub it on or it just falls out… there would be no rubbing, I like my fingers where they are! Tried letting him lick it off my finger, but didn’t feel this would be that beneficial. Tried various other things, but he lost interest. I don’t think it’s tasty enough to get him excited about eating it, so it’s languishing in a cupboard now.

Dogs seem to like the taste, paste is put on a soft brush each night to clean and plaque is definitely coming off. Only issue is it's very difficult to get it out of the tub! The design is poor and doesnt pump very well when pressed.

My cat has late stage 2 CKD. Is this product safe for him to have?

Many thanks

  • VioVet Staff

There is nothing within this product that should specifically cause an issue with kidney disease. However any change in diet can affect any special diet you are using for the CKD. It is therefore advised to run any supplement/diet changes past your vet if your cat has CKD just to be safe.

My dog has canine stomatitis can she use this?

Charlotte Mckenna

  • VioVet customer since 2021
  • From: Durham, United Kingdom

My vet recommended I use enzymatic toothpaste however I'm unable to physically brush her teeth as she doesn't like me touching her teeth, would this work? Her gums are severely inflamed

  • VioVet Staff

Yes you can apply this paste to the teeth rather than brushing, although it will be more effective if brushed onto the teeth. You should follow your vet's advice primarily on how to treat the stomatitis though.

Recent reviews concerning xyitol

Val Clements

Have read recent reviews regarding this product containing xyitol. I have purchssed this paste and don't see it listed on ingredients. Has this been removed from paste?
I'm concerned about using this if it still has xyitol, even small
amounts.

  • VioVet Staff

This product no longer contains Xylitol, a forumlation change a few years ago means it contains Sorbitol instead. I can confirm the listed ingredients you are seeing are accurate.

Toothpaste for Diabetic dog

Karen

What toothpaste is safe for my diabetic dog

  • VioVet Staff

Any toothpaste would be suitable as long as your dog does not eat too much of the paste. If your dog is prone to eating lots of the toothpaste as you brush then I advise choosing one that is low in glucose/sugar. OraFresh Paste is a good choice at it contains a sweetener, sorbitol, instead of sugar. This is safe for a diabetic dog as long as you follow the package guidelines on doseage.

Can you use more than one product at the same time

Tilly

Hi
My 8 yr old Lurcher has a growing problem with tatar on his teeth.
I was wondering if I can use both the paste and granules together.
If not which is the most effective.
Many thanks

  • VioVet Staff

Yes you can use our OraFresh granules and paste at the same time. The granules is a supplement to be added to the food whilst the paste is best used as a toothpaste. The paste will be more effective if used as a toothpaste, applied to the teeth and brushed. If this is not possible with your dog then the granules will work better.

Using in a toy

Christian

  • VioVet customer since 2018
  • From: Surrey, United Kingdom

Hi, my dogs hate me putting this directly on their teeth. Will it work as well if I put it in a toy that they then lick out? Many thanks.

  • VioVet Staff

This product is intended to be used as a toothpaste and so should be applied to the teeth directly really, the paste is unlikely to contact the teeth significantly if licked off of a toy.
If you are looking for a supplement to be put into the food then I advise using our OraFresh Dental Granules instead as these are dosed this way.

Concerns regarding xylitol

Julie Nicklin

  • VioVet customer since 2016
  • From: Tyne and Wear, United Kingdom

I'm a little concerned about this product containing xylitol, when I've read on numerous sites is toxic and dangerous for dogs even at a very tiny dosage. If I had known this product contained this i wouldn't have purchased it. Can you give me any advice regarding the effects of this please and any precautions needed. thank you

  • VioVet Staff

Hi Julie,

Thank you forgetting in touch - there's certainly a lot of information and it can be difficult to work out which sources are reliable. Please be assured that we would not produce a product for pets that was not safe, and we have great trust in our manufacturing partners when considering formulations.

Xylitol is known to be dangerous for dogs and cats in large amounts (usually found in large quantities in human ‘sugar free’ foods, or sugar substituted products such as some peanut butters - pure peanut butters are fine).

Xylitol is an ingredient used in dentistry as it can help reduce bad bacteria and plaque build-up. It has been approved for use in cats and dogs under the Catalogue of Feed Materials European Commission Directive 68/2013, and so has been thoroughly tested for safety when used in correct concentrations.

It is present in other products, for example Aquadent, who claim that Xylitol prevents the fixing of calcium and the formation of tartar. As another close example, garlic is also toxic to dogs in large enough amounts, but when used at a safe dose, is beneficial and is included in many supplements.

Xylitol is eliminated from the body and doesn't accumulate, making products like OraFresh which contain it in small amounts safe for daily use :-) I'd advise is keeping it out of reach of your pets in case they chew up the whole bottle but I'm sure you'd do this anyway!

Here are some examples if you wanted to know more detail about the amounts that could cause some side effects:

Dose that may cause some toxicity = 100mg / kg of body weight.

Orafresh contains 23.5mg / ml

1cm of paste = 0.75ml = 17.6 mg Xylitol.

Examples:

An average 4kg cat would need 17ml of OraFresh to reach this level, our dosage = 1.5ml

A 10kg dog would need 43ml (about half of the full bottle) of OraFresh to reach this level, our dosage = 3ml

Dogs over 25kg would need more than the entire bottle to reach this.

I hope that this has helped to alleviate concerns about the safety of this product. If you have any further questions, please do get in touch!

Kind regards,
Danielle C
